MONDELLO PARK RACE GUIDE

HISTORY
BTCC GridMondelloPark opened in 1968 and is the only permanent race track in the Republic of Ireland. The track was originally just 0.8 miles long. It ran from the main straight via Ford corner, around the rear of the paddock at Adelaide, to re-emerge at Paddock corner leading back to Dunlop and the main straight. In 1969 the Turn 3 extension was added to make the circuit 1.2 miles in length and this layout was used for all events until the international loop was added in 1998. The National circuit remains the most commonly used layout for car and motorcycle events with International races such as the BSB, BTCC,F3 and GT events taking place on the full International track.

EVENT FORMAT
The majority of classes at a Mondello event run just one qualifying session to decide the grids for two races, a shorter sprint race and a longer feature race. There are various ways that the classes use their qualifying times to decide grid positions. Some classes use the same grid for both races, others use a drivers fastest qualifying time for the grid for race one and their second fastest time for the grid positions for race two. Most commonly grids for race one are decided by qualifying times and grids for race two are decided on the finishing order of race one. Not all classes run two championship races at every event due to pressure of time or where, as in the case of Formula Vee,a qualifying race is required due to the large number of entries. Where only one race is run the length of the single race is usually equal to the feature races of the other classes.

CLASSES
Libre GridRace classes are split into single seater, saloon and sportscars with some of the classes within these groups running together. The Stryker Sportscars and Global Lights can often be seen sharing the track while the two budget Fiat classes, Punto and Uno, run together unless entry numbers dictate otherwise. Open and closed wheel cars generally do not run simultaneously, the exception being the all-comers Formula Libre events where single seaters and faster Sportscars such as ‘Radicals’can run together. The top of the tree in Single seaters are the F3000 cars of the Formula Libre championship. The Irish Touring Car Champiosnhip and Abarth Cup classes are the top of the range in Saloons while the GT Endurance and Global Lights Championships are the fastest of the Sportscar classes.
